Gabbeh Rugs: From the Nomadic Looms of Persia to Modern Homes

Step into our new gallery space this summer, and you will be greeted by a riot of colour, bold geometry, and the unmistakable warmth of hand-spun wool. The Art of Gabbeh: modern designs from old looms, on until Saturday 23rd August, is a celebration of one of Persia’s most evocative weaving traditions, reimagined for contemporary interiors.
A Rug with a Story in Every Knot
Gabbeh rugs originate from the nomadic tribes of the Zagros Mountains, woven for centuries by Qashqai and Luri women. Traditionally, they were not made for sale; these rugs were personal creations, destined for the weaver’s own tent floor. The thick, hand-knotted pile and rich natural dyes made them as practical as they were beautiful, while the designs reflected the weaver’s world: stylised animals, abstract landscapes, or freeform geometric patterns.
Unlike the rigid symmetry of many Persian carpets, Gabbehs were known for their freedom. Without pre-drawn patterns, each piece became an improvised work of art, shaped by the maker’s mood, memories, and imagination.
From Tent to Townhouse
In the late 20th century, Gabbeh rugs began to catch the eye of collectors and designers far from their mountain origins. Their minimal yet striking patterns felt surprisingly modern, their colours, from soft earthy neutrals to vibrant reds and blues, fitting effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Today, Gabbeh rugs are appreciated worldwide for exactly what the nomadic weavers always knew: they bring warmth, individuality, and soul to any space.
The Exhibition: Old Traditions, Fresh Designs
Our current exhibition, The Art of Gabbeh: modern designs from old looms, brings together a specially curated collection of contemporary Gabbeh rugs. Each one has been woven using traditional techniques such as handspun wool, natural dyes, and the tactile, thick pile, but the designs push into new territory. Think pared-back compositions, unexpected colour combinations, and a modern sense of proportion, while retaining the charm of a rug made entirely by hand.
Whether you are looking for a bold centrepiece for your living room, or simply want to enjoy the artistry and heritage that each piece represents, the exhibition is a chance to see these rugs in their full glory. And yes, every one is for sale.
