UNDERLAY

A rug (or large carpet or kilim/flatweave) laid straight on the floor can often skid around or on fitted carpet may creep. We offer three practical solutions. In all cases underlay will enhance the softness underfoot, ameliorate or completely remove slipping, and, over the long term, reduce wear. Underlay is part of good rug care, along with cleaning periodically (see here for information on this).

Super Velvet Underlay 

A high quality underlay to support rugs, carpets and kilims on wood, laminate, tile or stone floors. 

The traditional felt top side is entirely recycled. It is made from textile trade dross which provides cushioning with minimal shedding of fibres. The crumbed rubber underside stops any slipping and doesn't mark floors and is made from recycled car tyres. 

We can work out what is needed for your rug and cut to order, usually allowing about 4cms overlap of your rug, all round. It is supplied in 7.3 x 1.36m rolls. Some rug sizes relative to the roll width mean its better to allow a greater overlap. 
Cost: £35 + VAT per linear metre off the roll.

AKO Profilo V Mesh Underlay 

This is a premium 3mm thick anti-slip mesh underlay with a close pattern lattice for enhanced grip and cushioning. Designed for rugs on hard floors*.  The mesh is  coated on both sides with a unique PVC foam designed with a dual thickness lattice for optimum airflow, prolonging your rugs life span. Recommended for use with underfloor heating. Profilo mesh underlay is a great option for those looking for a premium underlay at an affordable price and with the benefit of a low impact environmental profile.

*Important note about this products: if the flooring is treated with water-based lacquers, allow at least 3 months full drying time before using Ako Profilo V Underlay. Only suitable for floorings treated with solvent-free sealants. Not suitable for vinyl floor tiles.

We will work out what is needed and cut to order allowing about 3cms overlap of your rug, all round. It is supplied in rolls of 180 cms width. Some rug sizes relative to the roll width mean its better to allow a greater overlap.

The cost of AKO mesh underlay is £28 + VAT per linear metre off the roll.

 

'Foxi' Underlay

This is designed for rugs or carpets laid on top of fitted carpets. In many cases without suitable intervention, on fitted carpets your rug will ruckle up or creep in the direction of the 'nap' of the fitted carpet it is laid on which can be very annoying and bad for the rug!

'Foxi' underlay has a slightly tacky adhesive coat on both sides which holds it to the fitted carpet and to the rug. It is designed to be put down and left down. It will usually last up to 20 years though individual use is varied and there is no firm time proposed. If you expect to frequently take up the rug in question, we do not recommend this product as the adhesion will be diminished after several such actions.

We will work out what is needed and cut to order allowing, in most cases, 3cms overlap of your rug, all round.  It is supplied in rolls of 185 cms width. Delivery is available and in some cases we may be able to help with fitting (but see below instructions). Both for additional costs.

To lay down a rug over 'Foxi' underlay:

• Place the rug where you want it to go and mark the corners with a coin, book, piece of masking tape or cellotape.
• Roll up the rug and put aside.
• Lay the 'Foxi' down carefully, flat. Allow an equal margin of overlap. Avoid standing on it at this stage. You may need a helper especially for larger rugs.
• Roll out the rug to align with your markers, which may require a little careful pulling around. Again avoid standing on it.
• Once in place using your hands smooth the rug towards its perimeters, pressing firmly as you do so. 
• That's it! 

The cost of Foxi underlay is £40 + VAT per linear metre off the roll (185 cms wide)
