The Unsung Hero of Rug Care: Why Underlay Matters

At The Nomads Tent, we are passionate about handwoven rugs and kilims. They are beautiful, practical, and crafted to last for generations, but like any good investment, they benefit from a little care and support. One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your rug (and your floor) is with the right underlay.

You might not think much about what sits under your rug, but underlay is the quiet hero of rug care. It enhances comfort underfoot, prevents rugs from slipping on hard surfaces, keeps them from creeping or bunching on fitted carpets, reduces wear, and helps protect the floor beneath. In short, underlay keeps your rug where you want it, feeling soft and looking its best for longer.

At The Nomads Tent we offer three types of underlay, each designed for different situations. For rugs placed on wood, tile, laminate, or stone floors, our Super Velvet Underlay is a reliable choice. It combines a recycled felt top for cushioning with a crumbed rubber underside made from recycled tyres, which grips the floor securely without leaving marks. It is supportive, durable, and adds a lovely sense of softness when you walk across your rug.

Another option for hard floors is the AKO Profilo V Mesh Underlay. This lightweight lattice design provides both grip and airflow, which not only keeps your rug in place but also helps extend its lifespan. Because it allows heat to circulate, it is particularly well suited to homes with underfloor heating.

Finally, for rugs that sit on top of fitted carpets, there is the Foxi Underlay. Without it, rugs often ruckle up or slowly shift in the direction of the carpet nap. Foxi has a lightly tacky surface on both sides that holds rug and carpet together, keeping everything smooth and secure. Once in place, it will usually last for many years with no need for adjustment.

Adding underlay may not feel as exciting as choosing a rug itself, but it is an important part of good rug care. It protects your investment, makes daily life more comfortable, and spares you the frustration of rugs that slide or bunch.
