How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Your Room

A practical guide from The Nomads Tent, Edinburgh

Choosing a rug is exciting, but size is the detail that often makes the biggest difference. A rug that fits well can pull a room together, make furniture feel settled, and bring a sense of calm to the space. At The Nomads Tent, we help people every day who are unsure where to start, so this guide focuses on simple steps that make the decision easier.

Why rug size matters

A rug does more than cover the floor. It shapes how a room feels. The right size can make a small room feel more open, or give a larger room a sense of structure. A rug that is too small tends to look lost. One that is too large can feel heavy. Getting the balance right is worth the effort.

Step 1: Measure the room and the furniture

Before you fall in love with a particular rug, take a few measurements. Note the size of the room, the layout of the furniture, and how much floor you want to see around the edges. A simple trick is to mark out potential rug sizes with masking tape. It gives you a clear sense of how the rug will sit in the space.

Living rooms: aim for a connected seating area

In a living room, the rug should help link the seating together.

A few reliable approaches

- All furniture sits on the rug. This works well in larger rooms and creates a very settled look.

- Only the front legs of sofas and chairs sit on the rug. This is a flexible option and suits most homes.

- The rug sits under the coffee table with some space around it. This is best for smaller rooms.

Common sizes

160 x 230 cm
200 x 300 cm
250 x 350 cm

Since all our rugs are handwoven, they do not come in exact standard sizes, but most pieces fall close to these ranges. Many of our Afghan and Persian rugs work beautifully in Edinburgh’s traditional tenements as well as more modern homes.

Dining rooms: allow space for the chairs

A dining rug needs to be large enough for chairs to move in and out without catching on the edge. A good rule is to add around 60 to 70 cm on each side of your table.

For example, a table that measures 90 x 160 cm usually suits a rug around 200 x 300 cm. Again, handwoven rugs vary slightly in size, so you may find a piece that is a little longer or shorter but still works perfectly. Flatweave kilims are especially good in dining rooms because they are durable, easy to clean, and sit neatly under furniture.

Bedrooms: frame the bed

A rug in the bedroom should feel soft underfoot and help anchor the bed visually.

Options that work well

- A large rug under the whole bed

- Two runners on either side

- One rug placed at the foot of the bed

Suggested sizes

For a double bed: around 200 x 300 cm
For a king: around 250 x 350 cm

As with all handwoven pieces, these sizes are approximate. Tribal rugs add warmth and character, which suits the quieter, more personal feel of a bedroom. Or thicker gabbeh rugs are great at adding warmth under foot.

Hallways and entrances: long lines, strong first impressions

Runners are ideal for hallways and entrances. Measure the length of the space and leave around 10 to 15 cm of floor visible on each side. It is also worth checking which way your doors open. Thicker pile rugs can catch on the bottom of a door, so a flatweave kilim is often a better choice in these areas. We stock a wide range of handwoven runners, so it is usually possible to find a length that fits well.

Keep proportion in mind

A rug should relate to the room as a whole, not just the furniture. Try to leave 20 to 40 cm of visible floor around the edges of the room. Align the rug with key features such as fireplaces or windows. In open plan spaces, rugs can help define different areas without adding physical barriers.

Why choose a handwoven rug

Size is important, but so is the story behind the rug. Every piece at The Nomads Tent is handwoven using traditional techniques. Each rug carries the character of the weaver and the region it comes from. These are pieces made to last, and choosing the right size helps them shine in your home.
