Good news, from January 2026 we'll offer Best quality cleaning of rugs at a better rate: £35/m2 +VAT. For silk rugs, super thick, extra heavy, flood damaged or soiled rugs please enquire. Cleaning will freshen up your rugs and keep them healthy. Regular cleaning generally helps rugs to last longer. There is no simple rule but we suggest roughly 10 year intervals. But a rug near an external door will need more frequent cleaning.

The cleaning process:

      • Bring your rugs in or send photos to our email or call to discuss. 0131 662 1612 or 07780 858 824 during shop hours (Wednesday to Saturday 11 to 5).
      • The first step in washing rugs is removal of grit deeply embedded, often the case with rugs that haven't been cleaned or shaken out regularly. Grit cuts away at the wool causing more rapid wear.
      • Fastness or stability of dyes and fibre quality are then checked along with any stains, to determine the best material for washing.
      • Rinsing with a centrifuge if the rug is not too big, or manually, often several times, followed by controlled warm air drying.
      • The whole process may be repeated to remove the most stubborn dirt.
      • Turnaround may be up to 2 months but usually less.
      • See below for more on repairs.

Costs: fringes and sides = £50-80/metre depending on degree of fineness. MOTH TREATMENT AND PRODUCTS

The common clothes moth or Tineola Bisselliella has a lot to answer for. Thousands of rugs and carpets, not to mention other woollen items, are destroyed every year by the tiniest little pest in our homes, the common clothes moth which is a very small moth with a wingspan of around 14mm and body length of about 8mm. They are most active between April and October. They feed on animal fibres and hair, bird nests, fur, clothing, carpets and upholstery made of animal fibre.

The adult moths don’t usually live very long, but the female can lay hundreds of eggs in her short life - sometimes she will lay more than one batch of eggs over the warmer months. The eggs lay dormant for 4 to 10 days before hatching. The larvae can then live up to 2 years, munching their way through the winter and continuing to ruin your precious carpets and rugs and other woolen items. We have solutions!

Keeping your home carpet moth free

Vacuum regularly and clean up spills or traces of food as soon as they happen - make sure you move the furniture too, the carpet moth larvae will happily live for a very long time somewhere that is dark and undisturbed. Get into the habit of checking for moths on a regular basis.
