Gavin Anderson, the founder of Nomadic Skies Expeditions will take us on a photographic journey into the remote and seldom visited valleys of the high Himalayas of North West Nepal. It is an area deep within Nepal’s largest National Park, within the habitat of the rare snow leopard, among snow-capped peaks, startling turquoise lakes inhabited by the Dolpo-pa people: an ancient Tibetan influenced culture where semi-nomadic yak herding remains central to mountain livelihoods.
Gavin, an experienced international development professional, will explain how the newly formed Nomadic Skies expeditions aim to work with the Dolpo-pa to test new forms of trekking tourism that benefit these mountain cultures. He will raise questions about whether negative and unintended consequences of tourism in fragile and remote areas can be avoided and how benefits for local communities can be maximised. Nomadic Skies will also be offering the opportunity to join a small number of pioneer expeditions to Dolpo that are planned in 2019 as part of this work.
